Day 62 Approaching the USA (Boston)
The highlight for today was the world cruise choir concert starring, among others Bill Healy. It was a short concert because many of the choir members from the first half of the trip, disembarked at Southampton. The theme of the concert was America, since we arrive there tomorrow. There were no Americans in the choir and I think there are only about 20 of them on board, but during the concert a large American flag was unfurled. The choir sang the American Trilogy and New York, New York. We attended a talk on the Amazon this morning, which gave me itchy feet. What an amazing rain forest! In preparation for our arrival in America tomorrow, we had to complete immigration forms, and tomorrow morning at 6.00a.m. we have to front up for a face to face immigration inspection. We found the forms quite hilarious. We had to answer yes or no to such questions as: Do you have a physical or mental disability or communicable disease or are you a drug addict? If you tick yes, what are you actually saying yes to? Another question asks if you have ever been convicted or arrested for a crime of moral turpitude? Bill thinks such a question would be better asked in a Jane Austen novel! One of the Americans was telling me that her daughter travelled down to Australia and New Zealand and that other little country near there. She had forgotten the name of this third country. I suggested Fiji, Noumea, Vanuatu, but none of these was right, then she remembered that the third country was Tasmania. Canadian surveillance planes used the Dawn Princess as a training run today. They flew close to the ship and then turned and flew way out to sea. These planes look for illegal immigrants, etc. approaching their shores. (Barbara)
