Dawn Princess World Cruise 2010 - Monday July 5, 2010

Day 45 Civitavecchia and Rome
Today after docking in Civitavecchia, we caught the train to Rome. We thought of you, Laura Healy, but you will be here next month. We went to the Colosseum and the forum, and had lunch in a small restaurant overlooking the Colosseum. As we had spent quite a bit of time in Rome previously, we decided to have a fairly relaxed day. The train trip from Civitavecchia to Rome took us one hour, but the passengers who went on the organized tour by bus to Rome took three hours because there was an accident on the autostrada. The train trip was quite interesting as we passed close to the sea for some of the time and then passed through farm - lands, over autostradas and through tunnels. On the way to Rome the lights were out in our carriage so the tunnels were pitch black and seemed to go on for a long time. We could feel our ears pop in the tunnels. It was a hot day in Rome, so we enjoyed a swim when we returned to the boat. An Italian tenor came on board to sing Italian songs such as Come Back to Sorrento and Arrivaderci Roma just before we sailed from Rome. The Dawn Princess jazz band played tonight and it was difficult to pull ourselves away from them, but we have an early start tomorrow. We have now set sail for Livorno. (Barbara) Tip for the day: Take the train into Rome from Civitavecchia for a return cost and all day travel in Rome for 9 euros. Great value. (Bill)
