Dawn Princess World Cruise 2010 - Sunday July 4, 2010

Day 44 Down the east coast of Italy, through the straits of Messina and up the west coast of Italy

We had a relaxing day at sea, today, American Independence Day. I watched our Italian chef demonstrate how to make a pasta dish with home - made pesto and a fish dish with two different types of fish. I lay in a deck chair and started my fourth novel for the cruise and went to the library to get the daily sudoku puzzle. The theme for lunch in the horizon bar was German food. The chefs had carved beer bottles and steins out of ice, and also out of watermelons. They had cooked whole legs of pork and every conceivable type of sausage. They had the real German salty pretzels, not to mention Black Forest cake, and had decorated the dining room with an Oktoberfest theme. Today, we traveled down the Adriatic Sea, around the toe of Italy, between the mainland and Sicily through the Straits of Messina, and then up the other side of Italy through the Tyrrhenian Sea. We were very close to land when we were rounding the toe of Italy and could see people on the beaches, boats which could have been run by the Mafia and even a road going through a tunnel. We sailed within 1 nautical mile of the island of Stromboli. It was puffing smoke as we passed, and is called the Lighthouse of The Mediterranean because it glows in the dark. It is an active volcano with 800 permanent residents! It is 2000 metres from the sea floor to its summit and shows clear evidence of recent eruptions. We learnt the Chicago Swing at dancing class, which was a lot of fun, and went to dance practice this evening. There was another formal evening tonight with the obligatory photos, we watched the Dawn Princess singers and dancers do a tribute to the Beatles, and then listened to the jazz band play. Bill, in his dinner suit is still going strong and has gone on to watch the movie Star Trek XI. I am just going to finish this and go to bed by midnight because we have a day ashore tomorrow. (Barbara) I have returned from the old Star Trek movie. When are they going to revive the genre? Have they run out of ideas and characters? Choir practice continued today with a full run through of the program. It goes for about 25 minutes altogether. Should be good after a couple more rehearsals. (Bill)
