Dawn Princess World Cruise 2010 - Saturday July 31, 2010

Day 71 In the Caribbean just north of Venezuela
What happens when the Dawn Princess loses its electricity? Just as we were going to breakfast this morning, the lights in our cabin went out. Then we realized that only a few emergency lights were on, then we realized that we had stopped moving. The electricity was back on in about half an hour only to go off again half an hour after this, when we were at our lecture. The lecturer’s slide show went off, all lights went off, all air conditioning went off, the lifts stopped working, we could not get any water from the taps, the toilets stopped flushing, the washing machines and dryers stopped working mid cycle, no one could send or receive emails, the ovens in the kitchens stopped working and of course the ship stopped moving. The captain kept coming on the public address system to apologize, and to say that lunch would be delayed. (We have been fed so well on this ship that we could all go for several days with no food and probably be the healthier for it.) The captain is Italian and one wit came up with “CRUISE” being an acronym for: Can’t really understand Italians speaking English. It is quite unfair as none of us can speak Italian as well as the crew can speak English, but everyone had plenty of time to think about such things today. We did the Salsa, today, at dance class and tonight we watched the vocal
impressionist, Tony Cherry, sing songs with the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, etc. His singing was good but his jokes left a lot to be desired. Evidently, we are still on track to arrive in CuraƧao tomorrow morning and the problem seems to have been fixed. (Barbara) I have included some underwater photos from my snorkelling adventure yesterday without annotations. The photos are courtesy of George, another passenger, who had an underwater digital camera. (Bill)
